I'd recommend something a little newer (for reliability sake) and more powerful (for safety sake), but it was still a great car to start out on. Something like a mid-late 90's honda civic would probably be pretty good. It should be reliable and inexpensive, they don't look to terrible (although they aren't nearly as beautiful as a Z), and they can still be relatively sporty (particularly with a few mild modifications). Something else I'd suggest would be to go to local auto-x events. This will give you a relatively safe controlled environment to get a better feel for the way the car behaves and might provide useful experience for emergency accident avoidance situations.
